Yana Gorokhovskaia
Research Director, Strategy and Design
Yana joined Freedom House in 2021 as a senior research analyst working on the Transnational Repression and Migration portfolio. She oversaw the research for "Defending Democracy in Exile," which was launched in June 2022. Before joining Freedom House, Yana researched protest trends and civil society activism in post-Soviet states. She received a PhD in Political Science from the University of British Columbia and was a postdoctoral scholar at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute from 2016 to 2019. Her research and analyses have been published in Politico, Foreign Affairs, Just Security, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, Post-Soviet Affairs, Russian Politics, Democratization, Russian Analytical Digest, Moscow Times, Ponars Policy Memos, EurasiaNet, and International Migration.
